  • General eBike Questions

  • What is an electric bike?

An electric bicycle also known as an eBike is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor which can be used for propulsion. Also known as Pedelecs, the term "pedelec" (from pedal electric cycle) refers to a pedal-assist eBike with an electric motor and a decent but not excessive top speed. Pedelecs are legally classed as bicycles rather than low-powered motorcycles or mopeds (source Wikipedia).

  • Do I have to pedal an electric bike?

It is a legal requirement for electric bikes that power assistance only be applied when the user is pedalling. If you don’t wish to pedal, we suggest a big downhill route.

  • Is an electric mountain bike more likely to get a puncture?

All Mark electric mountain bike uses Schwalbe’s specially designed eMTB tyres with puncture protection, so you can rest assured knowing you’re well covered!

  • What are the running costs of an electric bike?

A charge from empty will cost only around 12 pence! Electric bikes are a very economical and environmentally friendly form of transport.

  • Do I need a licence to ride on the road?

The Scrambler C, and indeed all Mark2 bikes are UK road legal. That means it meets the criteria that allows our eBikes to be classed as ordinary bicycles, therefore no licence, registration, tax or insurance is required. You do have to be 14 however to ride an eBike on the road.

  • Is a Mark2 electric bike noisy?

No! Our eBikes have a premium quality 250W motor which, although powerful, is barely audible. We want you to look and feel confident on your electric bike, neither you nor anyone else will hear it when you switch to power assisted pedalling.

  • How do I know which is the best eBike to buy?

There is a vast range of electric bikes on the market. We looked at the eBikes available and determined to design a bike that gave you outstanding quality at an affordable price. We believe our electric bikes are difficult to beat.

  • eBike Batteries

  • What is the battery/power pack life of a Mark2 electric bike?

Every one of our Mark2 power packs comes with a three-year minimum capacity guarantee of 70%. In the unlikely situation it drops below this level, it will be replaced free of charge. With some basic maintenance, the battery will likely last much longer than this. It is conditional for this guarantee that the power pack be charged at least once a month.

  • What is the range?

The standard power pack will give 30-50 miles of range depending on the level of assist used (there are 5), the terrain and weight of the rider. The power pack capacity is 375Wh and comes with a 3 year warranty. A long range 460Wh power pack is available for additional cost.

  • How long does the eBike battery take to charge?

Your Mark2 electric bike battery will take 4-5 hours to charge from flat. We recommend regular charging for the health and longevity of the battery.

  • How long will the battery last?

This excellent quality Promovec power pack has a 3 year warranty that can be extended to 5 years. That is the confidence we have in the quality of the power pack. Its expected lifespan is 800 cycles. That is 800 complete charges. To put that into perspective, if you get 50 miles to a charge and ride 150 miles per week then you can expect the battery to be good for at least 5 years.

  • What's the range of an electric bike?

The Mark2 eBike battery will give you about 30 to 60 miles of use, depending on the terrain. On flatter roads, it will be nearer to 60 miles, while if you are on a very hilly route, the battery will provide around 30 miles of use. The Mark2 eBike motor is only activated when needed so you can cover some very long distances if you wish. In fact you can ride as far as you like, even without the battery!

  • Can I remove the eBike battery?

The eBike battery is easily removable with a secure key so you can simply take the battery inside to charge your Mark2. Mark2 electric bikes are also designed to be strong and rigid enough to allow cycling without the battery attached if you choose.

  • Is the battery removable?

Yes, the battery is securely locked into the frame with a key and can be removed to charge. It can also be easily charged on the bike too.

  • eBike Riding Experience

  • Do I have to pedal?

Yes. The Scrambler C is a UK road legal eBike. That means it only assists when you pedal, assists up to 15.5mph while pedaling (you can however pedal as fast as you like) and the motor is the maximum power allowed (250W).

  • How fast can I go on an electric bike?

You can go as fast as you like (within displayed speed limits) on your electric bike, but the pedal assist will cut out at 15.5mph (25kph) to comply with EU law.

  • Where can I ride my new eBike?

An electric bike can be ridden anywhere a traditional bike can be ridden (only further and with less effort).

  • Can I ride an electric bike without power?

Yes! The low weight of the Mark2 eBike makes it easy to ride with or without power.

  • Can I ride it in the wet?

All the electrical components are water proof. The Danish designed electrics are safe and reliable in the worst of conditions.

  • How heavy is a Mark2 eBike?

The Mark2 Scrambler eBike weighs just 19.2kgs and the X-Cross checks in at 21.1kgs. These are impressively low compared to other eBikes on the market. All Mark2 models have been designed to keep weight to a minimum.

  • eBike Servicing

  • What if something were to go wrong with my electric bike?

You can rest assured knowing that you are covered for three years by the Mark2 eBike guarantee programme. We are very confident of the quality of our electric bikes. For more information, see our warranty page.

  • Where should I service my eBike?

Mark2 eBikes use standard bike components, therefore you can take it to any normal bicycle workshop for mechanical repairs and servicing.

  • Does it need special servicing?

The proprietary components of motor, power pack and electrics are essentially maintenance free. The rest of the bike components are standard and be serviced and repaired by any bicycle mechanic using readily available parts.

  • What if I get a puncture?

Like most bicycles, punctures are an unfortunate fact of life. We use heavy duty Schwalbe puncture resistant tyres to reduce the risk.
